I am gay. Have been my whole life. I am married. My wife is an extraordinary woman.
We made our promises in front of family and friends, and the laws that we believe in -- those of country, of season, of element. Those laws are infinite and unchanging. The laws of the current government are transient, and at this time do not recognise what we have done. But that does not make our promises any less, it does not change how we feel.
We are married. And proud of it.
(although it would be nice if the government would listen to the people, and not to the 'power' of the religious few..., and it would be nice if they changed these transient laws to acknowledge that love and committment do not recognise gender)

Marriage equality is good for stability and good for families of all kinds. I think it is disgraceful that some medical practitioners are trying to use their professional status to deny equal rights to certain sections of the community on the basis of no evidence whatsoever.

I don't understand marriage, except perhaps as a religious ceremony, but I abhore inequality and discrimination. We currently have a legally defined institution which actively discriminates against people based on their sexual orientation. Either the legislation has to change to allow same sex marriage, or marriage should cease to have legal status (and simply be a ceremonial entity, available to anyone).

There is argument against marriage equality that hasn't been trumped now by evidence and/or compassion. It's time to recognise that denying it is simply shameful, and looking back in a few decades time, those on the wrong side of history will be remembered exactly the way they deserve to be.

Discrimination is well recognised as a social determinant of health and having a piece of federal legislation that clearly treats same sex couples and heterosexual couples differently is discriminatory. I don't believe marriage equality will end social discrimination against gay, lesbian and transgender Australians overnight but it will send a clear message that discriminating against their relationships is not right in our secular society. That message will hopefully be heard by all, but particularly young gay and lesbian Australians who are perhaps most vulnerable to the negative health consequences of social discrimination.

I am a gay doctor who has lived with my same sex partner for the past 39 years. We had to go to Canada in 2006 to marry, and all we are allowed to do in Qld is register as civil partners. Australia is so behind the times and modern thought on this equality issue that it beggars belief. It would not matter so much if it was not so harmful to young gay men and lesbians who see no support from government or the law for their perfectly legitimate life style. Low self esteem, self harm and suicide is often the result.

As a budding Doctor, I believe that all patients need to be treated with dignity, respect and in a non-judgemental attitude. Every patient deserves that, regardless of their sexual orientation. Similarly, I believe in equal treatment of marriage, which is a union, and long-term commitment, of two lovers, regardless whether they are straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender; marriage shouldn’t be restricted to beliefs of fundamentalist religions. Every human is capable, and deserves, of love, care, kindness and compassion. Taking away that core human right is discrimination and injustice. Bio-psycho-social consequences of any form of discrimination is disastrous. Today we witness such health consequences of past discrimination against indigenous communities in Australia. Why can’t we see the same issues with GLBT communities – if we could we would be able to alleviate a whole lot of suffering that GLBT communities face now, and in the future, as result of discrimination by the society as a whole. We live in the 21st century; we need to drop the fundamentalist dogmas and stereotyping. Therefore, I strongly believe that treating all people with equality promotes health and well-being.

To me, marriage equality is about treating same-sex-attracted Australians equally under the law. There is no evidence from unbiased sources demonstrating any potential adverse effect of legalising same-sex marriage, so the government needs to stop discriminating against this group! LGBTI Australians suffer enough from stigma and undue mental health issues already and the Australian government needs to take their side.

Allowing equality in marriage cannot damage marriage as it exists currently, this is scare mongering. Marriage is a declaration of love and sharing that declaration with the community, how can we limit this to only a certain proportion of the population? You can be a good Christian and support equality in marriage. The change in the law will not be forcing churches to marry anyone against their will, it doesn’t remove anyones rights, it grants more rights to more people. Equality for all; let everyone that wants to show their love and committment.

“Gay people are born and belong to every society in the world. They are all ages, all races, all faiths. They are doctors and teachers, farmers and bankers, soldiers and athletes. And, whether we know it, or whether we acknowledge it, they are our family, our friends, and our neighbors. Being gay is not a western invention. It is a human reality.” H. Clinton (2012).

To not allow gay men and women the right to marry simply reinforces the negative stigma, discrimination, harassment and hatred from certain members of society towards the gay community. The gay community should not be made to suffer, to be discriminated against and to be marginalized as they currently are within their own communities. Marriage equality and full equality within the law is a step towards enabling gay men and women the opportunity to feel valued within the community that they live in and contribute to. Gay families, many with children, will feel more accepted, stable and secure in knowing that they live in a country they feel socially and legally protected by.

Cheers folks, I strongly support anyone who is striving to bring greater balance, common sense, logic and intelligent discussion to enlighten this debate. The more definitively factual and validated medical and scientific evidence you can disseminate, the more balanced and level the debate will become, against opinion and prejudice and unequally weighted arguments against the gay community.

The mental health outcomes of this continuing debate include high levels of psychological distress for same sex attracted people. In a population which includes being over 4 times more likely to attempt suicide and same sex youth between 5 and 15% more likely to attempt suicide, it is important for our Governments to do whatever possible to reduce discrimination and stigmatization. The cheapest, quickest and most effective way to improve mental health is to legislate for marriage equality. If our Government and opposition are committed to improving the mental health of Australia’s they will allow a conscience vote and change the Marriage Act.

You have the full support of Psychologists for Marriage Equality
